Bahamas Bowl/Potato Bowl

Two games to catch at work where I get the occasional odd look for this pursuit to watch every game.  I've sort of become "the bowl game" guy which is not something I aspired to be but this blog probably disproves that. Oh well, better to be known as the "bowl game guy" than the "b.o. guy."  But what if I'm both?

This game used to be sponsored by Popeye's until the fried chicken chain was bought by Canadian based Restaurant Brands International which didn't see value in the sponsorship.  Oh yeah, wait until December 22nd sales plummet.

Ohio University vs. Alabama-Birmingham

Ohio U squandered a chance to play for the MAC title by losing to Akron and Buffalo to finish the season while UAB was back in college football after the program was killed off in 2014 and then revived a year later.

As for watching the game, it's a little tricky while I'm working. The mandatory live quarter is done while I'm on the air although I was popping in and out watching OU roll up the score in the first half.  One luxury of working in radio is having big screen TVs.

This game was all Bobcats.  I guess they had to get the taste of losing their last two games out of their collective mouths. My OU alum co-workers were pretty happy.  Randy, Marty and Dave, congrats!

Evidently so were a number of OU fans who just waltzed into the game without tickets.  Reddit's CFB feed had updates from Ohio U fans who walked into the game without tickets, brought in coolers of beer, got on the field and wound up holding the trophy.

If your team ever makes this game, it looks like its definitely worth the trip to Nassau.

Ohio U 41  UAB 6

My pick:  Ohio U.

What did I eat:  Technically, nothing.  I was at work and had lunch prior to the game, a chicken burrito from Chipotle.  It was the first time I ever walked into the Norwood Chipotle at lunch and was the only person at the counter. I thought about trying their maligned chips and queso but saw they were nearly 800 calories. While I don't look like a guy who counts calories I do like my pants to fit.  Pass.

Bowl swag:  Gift suite, iSlides sandals, drawstring backpack, beach towel, bowl pin.  Considering the lack of security, players could probably take whatever they liked.

Fun fact:  Ohio U made their first bowl appearance at the 1962 Sun Bowl, where they lost 15-14 to West Texas. That game is best remembered for Skip Hoovler's 91-yard interception return for a score, the longest in Sun Bowl history.

Next up, the game from Boise.

Wyoming vs. Central Michigan

The reason to watch this one, Wyoming QB Josh Allen who is predicted to be one of the first quarterbacks taken in the NFL draft.

I watched the first half of this game while I was on the air.  Do I technically watch every play while I'm working?  Yes, yes I do.

This was a good game to test out the color contrast and brightness controls on your TV.

Both teams in their home colors. And the blue smurf turf.  My eyes were sore.  Could one team not be convinced to wear white?

It was pretty much all Wyoming in the first half.  I had other stuff to do after 6pm and didn't catch the second half.  Evidently I didn't miss much, including bowl mascot Spuddy Buddy who was not shown one time according to always accurate "internet accounts."  That won't happen here.

How does espn show an entire game sponsored by Famous Idaho Potatoes and not show the iconic mascot?  I smell a conspiracy, and delicious baked potatoes.

Wyoming 37 CMU 14 - not a good day for the Chips, who had eight turnovers.  Maybe their hands were greasy from all the potato chips they ate before the game.  Chips, potato bowl, get it.  That's what you come here for.

My pick:  Wyoming.  Picks record back to .500, 5-5.

What did I eat:  Nothing, I was working. I'm not an animal that needs to be fed every few hours.  Oh wait, there were tons of Christmas cookies available.  Check that, I had a couple Christmas cookies.

Bowl swag:  Gift suite, Oakley sunglasses, Under Armour backpack, beanie.

Fun fact:   The list of items prohibited from Albertson's Stadium, home of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. include but are not limited to:  e-cigarettes, laptops and drones.  Yes, leave your drone at home.  Also potatoes, you cannot bring your own potato to the Potato Bowl. (Falls under outside food or drink.)

Wrapping it up

I guess I need to put a bow on BowlQuest.  Alabama just beats the enthusiasm out of you despite a great second half in the game. Alabam...
