BowlQuestXI

BowlQuest - it's back.  Is it bigger and better than ever? Not really. There were 40 bowl games two years ago and there are 40 this year. And then game 41 to decide the national championship.

Last year I tried a dumb idea called "Not BowlQuest" because I was unhappy with Michigan State's poor season and it did not work. Michigan State came back this year, so I'm better about that.  It's all or nothing, watch the games or not.

Here's how it works.  I attempt to watch every bowl game, but not all the game.  One quarter live is required and I can rely on my sons to watch a quarter and report back if I'm not available.  I started this 12 years ago when my sons were 11 and 7-years old.  It was a goof back then and they would actually do it. They are now 23 and 19. Here they are at a Steelers/Packers game a couple weeks ago.

And this is what they looked like 12 years ago. Margaritas is no more.

So, a lot of time has passed and in that time they both have become really big football fans.  I have no idea where that came from. Hopefully they will agree to do this ridiculous thing again but if they don't it won't be the first time they bailed on me. That's not on them, it's my "hobby" as they say. Anything they can do is appreciated.  It's just dopey.

There you have it, the foolish premise behind BowlQuest. People (maybe four) have asked me to bring it back.  So yes, here we go.

Here are the games.

2017 Bowl Schedule
Saturday, Dec. 16
New Orleans Bowl (1 p.m., ESPN): Troy vs. North Texas
Cure Bowl (2:30 p.m., CBSSN): Western Kentucky vs. Georgia State
Las Vegas Bowl (3:30 p.m., ABC): Boise State vs. Oregon
New Mexico Bowl (4:30 p.m., ESPN): Marshall vs. Colorado State
Camellia Bowl (8 p.m., ESPN): Arkansas State vs. Middle Tennessee

*The First Saturday is a bitch. Five games out of the gate.  The Las Vegas Bowl is always a solid match up and don't sleep on the heavy green in the New Mexico Bowl.

Tuesday, Dec. 19
Boca Raton Bowl (7 p.m., ESPN): Akron vs. FAU

*Interested in the "Lane Train" for FAU.  Lane Kiffin is a gift, check out his Twitter.

Wednesday, Dec. 20
Frisco Bowl (8 p.m., ESPN): SMU vs. Louisiana Tech

*Frisco is not San Franciso, it's Frisco, Texas. I think SMU just lost their head coach. Or AD. Who knows, coaches jump ships like rats.  Players have to sit a year, coaches get to cash in.

Thursday, Dec. 21
Gasparilla Bowl (8 p.m., ESPN): Temple vs. FIU

*I think this game is now sponsored by Bad Boy Mowers. It used to be sponsored by Beef 'O' Brady's, the only time I've watched a bowl at the actual sponsor location.  It was also sponsored by Bitcoin. Really, anyone who wants to sponsor a bowl game, this is your opportunity.

Friday, Dec. 22
Bahamas Bowl (12:30 p.m., ESPN): UAB vs. Ohio
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (4 p.m., ESPN): Central Michigan vs. Wyoming

*I'll be on the air (on 103.5 WGRR) during these two games.  No problem, TV in studio.   What's that you say, where is Spuddy Buddy, the greatest bowl game mascot next to King Obi? He's right here.

Saturday, Dec. 23
Birmingham Bowl (12 p.m., ESPN): USF vs. Texas Tech
Armed Forces Bowl (3:30 p.m., ESPN): San Diego State vs. Army
Dollar General Bowl (7 p.m., ESPN): Appalachian State vs. Toledo

*Yes, Armed Forces Bowl with an armed force. The USF/TTU game is a shoot-out waiting to happen and App State vs. Toledo should be good too.

Sunday, Dec. 24
Hawaii Bowl (8:30 p.m., ESPN): Fresno State vs. Houston

*This game used to test the patience of Mrs. Keith but she doesn't care anymore.  Usually we watch a quarter and then switch to "It's A Wonderful Life."

Tuesday, Dec. 26
Heart of Dallas Bowl (1:30 p.m., ESPN): Utah vs. West Virginia
Quick Lane Bowl (5:15 p.m., ESPN): Duke vs. NIU
Cactus Bowl (9 p.m., ESPN): Kansas State vs. UCLA

*That Heart of Dallas Bowl used to be a throwaway.  Not this year.  Great game.  This whole day is solid.

Wednesday, Dec. 27
Independence Bowl (1:30 p.m., ESPN): Florida State vs. Southern Miss
New Era Pinstripe Bowl (5:15 p.m., ESPN): Boston College vs. Iowa
Foster Farms Bowl (8:30 p.m., Fox): Arizona vs. Purdue
Texas Bowl (9 p.m., ESPN): Texas vs. Missouri

*Hard to believe Florida State has to go to Shreveport, the worst bowl destination.  I don't think they'll play there next year.  Jimbo Fisher, who jumped ship to Texas A&M, is a carpet bagger who held FSU hostage to cash in.

Thursday, Dec. 28
Military Bowl (1:30 p.m., ESPN): Virginia vs. Navy
Camping World Bowl (5:15 p.m., ESPN): Oklahoma State vs. Virginia Tech
Alamo Bowl (9 p.m., ESPN): Stanford vs. TCU
Holiday Bowl (9 p.m., FS1): Michigan State vs. Washington State

*Here we go, just good game after good game. And I'm off for all of them. And here we go, Michigan State back in a bowl, taking on Mike Leach and his WSU Cougars. Mike Leach is wonderful.

Friday, Dec. 29
Belk Bowl (1 p.m., ESPN): Texas A&M vs. Wake Forest
Sun Bowl (3 p.m., CBS): Arizona State vs. NC State
Music City Bowl (4:30 p.m., ESPN): Kentucky vs. Northwestern
Arizona Bowl (5:30 p.m., CBSSN): New Mexico State vs. Utah State
Cotton Bowl Classic (8:30 p.m., ESPN): Ohio State vs. USC

*Nine games in two days, both vacation days for me. The Arizona Bowl has moved from the internet to TV.  That's right, America cannot get enough of terrible bowl games. The Cotton Bowl is going to be great.

Saturday, Dec. 30
TaxSlayer Bowl (12 p.m., ESPN): Mississippi State vs. Louisville
Liberty Bowl (12:30 p.m., ABC): Iowa State vs. Memphis
Fiesta Bowl (4 p.m., ESPN): Penn State vs. Washington
Orange Bowl (8 p.m., ESPN): Wisconsin vs. Miami

*Yes, please.  That Liberty Bowl is going to be a good game. I hate the TaxSlayer Bowl robbing us of one of the greatest bowl game names of all time.

Monday, Jan. 1
Outback Bowl (12 p.m., ESPN2): Michigan vs. South Carolina
Peach Bowl (12:30 p.m., ESPN): Auburn vs. UCF
Citrus Bowl (1 p.m., ABC): Notre Dame vs. LSU
Rose Bowl (5 p.m., ESPN): Oklahoma vs. Georgia
Sugar Bowl (8:45 p.m., ESPN): Clemson vs. Alabama

*Michigan State should be playing on New Year's Day.  We beat Michigan. And Penn State. Still, a fantastic day of games.  I will not the leave house.

Monday, Jan. 8
College Football Playoff National Championship (8 p.m., ESPN)

*Please do not have Alabama play in this game.

Wrapping it up

I guess I need to put a bow on BowlQuest.  Alabama just beats the enthusiasm out of you despite a great second half in the game. Alabam...
